Glutamine is responsible for the regulation of protein synthesis in the body and is a nitrogen transmitter. In addition, it cares for acid balance and strengthens the immune system.

It also plays a key role in nitrogen metabolism. Toxic ammonia formed in the transformation of amino acids in various tissues is assimilated by its reaction with glutamic acid, leading to the formation of glutamine. The enzyme that controls this reaction is called glutamine synthetase.

Glutamine is a type of ammonia storage that is “recovered” by converting this amino acid back to acid. This process is part of the biochemical synthetic cycles of many nitrogen compounds that take place in living organisms.

Glutamine participates in the synthesis of purines, pyrimidines and many amino acids. In adverse conditions for the body (stress, illness, physical effort), the demand for L-glutamine increases rapidly, which reduces its supply. The body produces some amounts of this amino acid, but in conditions of a large deficit, it begins to obtain L-glutamine, among others from skeletal muscle as a result of catabolic reactions.

L-glutamine has both anti-catabolic and anabolic role.
